Uncle Lucius, Country Roots Rock Band - Austin Texas

uncle lucius band

Uncle Lucius is fast becoming one of the most talked about bands in Austin, Texas. The "Live Music Capitol of the World" is abuzz about the four piece roots-rock foursome that is gigging heavily at the top venues in town. They have headlined Antone's, Threadgill's World Headquarters and The Saxon Pub to name a few. Their high energy live shows make even the "stick in the mud" crowd stomp their feet and beg for more. With the release of their debut album, "Something They Ain't", the buzz is going to undoubtedly become a roar. Uncle Lucius blends elements of rock, country, and soul to produce a tangible sound that is gaining them a very diverse following in and around the Central Texas area.

Vocalist Kevin Galloway grew up in South and East Texas (Freeport and Big Sandy respectively), where he started his love of music singing anywhere from churches to bars. He moved to Austin as a singer/songwriter playing open mics and local clubs until early '05 when he decided to start a band in order to more effectively express his musical vision. Kevin's powerful soul-filled vocals posses a distinct quality of warmth and awareness that immediately draws the listener in. His voice reflects the country and soul that Kevin grew up with, as well as bringing forth a modern viewpoint. Kevin also plays rhythm guitar, and adds his own distinct feel to the Uncle Lucius songbook.

Lead guitarist Mike Carpenter takes the smooth balance of warm texture and soulful tasty licks, and lays them right in the middle of the Uncle Lucius sound. Mike grew up in Houston, Texas where he began playing guitar as a child. He has been a musician in Austin since the late 90's. His influences range from Neil Young, to Robert Johnson, to Jimmy Page (with everything in between). He previously played guitar, mandolin, and sang in country band Something Johnson, as well as lead guitar and vocals for Molasses Creak before joining Uncle Lucius. Mike also contributes his unique style and vision to Uncle Lucius' songwriting as well as occasional mandolin and vocals.

Bassist Hal Vorpahl grew up in East Texas (Lufkin), and he found a love for poetry as well as music at a young age. He has been playing music in Austin since early '00. His musical influences range from the classic country he grew up with to the blues, rock, and "anything with soul" he has discovered since. He previously handled vocal and bass duties in Texas power trio Long Time Comin. His mix/match style of rhythm and melody glues the Uncle Lucius backbeat together, creating a solid foundation for music to take off from. Hal also contributes his lyrical touch and writing skills to Uncle Lucius' distinct blend of rootsy, soulful sound.

Drummer Jason Armstrong grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas where he began playing drums as soon as he learned how to put together a make-shift drum kit out of pots and pans. He followed his passion throughout high school, playing in the drumline as well as some local bands around town. Soon afterwards he moved to Austin and played drums in the experimental rock band Wu Li before joining Uncle Lucius. Jason's distinct view and rhythm is the backbone and driving force of Uncle Lucius' live sound.
